Artist: Disturbed

Review:
Even though I have all of their albums on my computer and know quite a few songs of them, my expectations when seeing Disturbed live were set low. I'm not that much of a nu metal fan with some exceptions including KoRn.

With that being said, that is probably the only negative commentary I have about them. David Draiman proved to be one of the best nu metal singers alive and kicking. They played a couple of new songs, but also some from their breakthrough album 'The Sickness' and Genesis cover 'Land of Confusion'. Draiman's voice is much like that of Phil Collins, though with an edge, and the instrumental background was tight. Flawless, actually. Accompanied with great weather and tasteful beer, this was one of the best performances I have witnessed.

The only thing that was lacking in this performance was an opportunity for circle pits and walls of death. Most metalfans love 'em, but I find them unnecessary. Apparently Disturbeds lead singer disagreed and attempted to form walls of deaths and circlepits, but their music seemed just a bit too soft for the real deal. It seemed the crowd didn't mind.

A definite 'yes', to the question whether I would want to see them again. 8/10.

Artist: Motley Crue

Review:
The first review of Motley Crue. These hard rock legends have returned in 2008 with their album 'Saints of Los Angeles'. Though their album was positively reviewed by both fans and critics, they seemed to have lost their vibe when it comes to live auditions.

It seemed as though the band members have been rocking too much before their performance even started. They talked too much and played too little. According to other people (I walked away because I was too tired/wasted) their piano song was totally messed up.

That negativity aside, they had quite a steady setlist, including 'Girls, Girls, Girls, 'Saints of Los Angeles', 'Shout At The Devil', 'Kickstart My Heart', 'Same Old Situation'. I definitely enjoyed hearing the classics, even though I wasn't even alive until the late 80's.

7.5/10

Artist: KoRn

Review:
KORN.
One of my first metal bands I've listened to. I was a huge fan back then and listen to them almost all the time. I have seen them in 2007 and this year I got a chance to see them again.

My previous experience with KoRn was good. Not amazing, but good. This year KoRn certainly surprised me. The vocals of lead singer Jonathan Davis were better than ever. So good actually that I was wondering if he was lipsynching. He was energetic, played with the crowd and KoRn played a killer setlist. With a different drummer this time and not a bad one at all!

KoRn played most of their stronger material, such as Falling Away From Me, the Pink Floyd cover 'Another Brick In The Wall', 'Freak on a leash' and 'Blind'. In contrary to 2007, they omitted all the weaker stuff like 'Word Up' and 'A.D.I.D.A.S'. A big plus here. The vibe was great and definitely one of the best Graspop performances of 2009.

See this band again? Definitely.
8/10.

Artist: Marilyn Manson

Review:
Seldom have I seen an artist (band) that is so narcissistic. While attending Graspop Metal Meeting 2009, I had the opportunity to see Marilyn Manson perform live. I used to like Marilyn Manson and listen to his music quite often, so my expectations were fairly high. Even more because of the fact that Marilyn Manson was the closing act of GMM 2009.

Marilyn Manson kicked off his setlist with some strong songs, but towards the middle and end of the show, he decided to play some mellow ones. This is not a good combination with thousands of drunken metalheads. It was striking how Marilyn Manson constantly kicked over his microphone stand and even smashed his mic two times on the ground. Some crew members of him constantly put the microphone stand upwards again. This was funny, but it also looked quite arrogant, as was the costume changing/getting his makeup done after every song. But this is probably a part of is act - I don't know, this was my first time seeing him live.

Fortunately there were also quite a few faster songs, such as the Beautiful People, Sweet Dreams, the Dope Show, Disposable Teens, etc. There were also some nice prop-action involved; such as when Manson showed up on stage in a vacuum plastic box. Towards the middle of the song he crawled out of it. Rather interesting to look at.

The contact with the audience was poor. His only two lines were 'Oh it's Belgium isn't it" and "According to my statistics, your country is the biggest producer of drugs." (twice, after the audience responded weakly). An encore was expected, but nothing came. The band left the stage without saying goodbye, leaving the majority of the crowd disappointed.

See Marilyn Manson live again? Maybe at a festival, but I surely wouldn't buy tickets again.

6.8/10.

Artist: The Birthday Massacre

Review:
My girlfriend introduced me to this band when their song 'Blue' was released a couple of months ago. The video clip was interesting, but the music just wasn't my kind of thing.

Then I saw them live at SD 2006 and they proved they are more than just computer sounds. They don't take themselves too seriously, which is a good thing if you make electropop-ish music. The female singer is definitely cute and the rest of the band sets up a hyperactive show. Playing for approx. an hour, they - I guess - played all the songs of their album. I enjoyed it and I gained some more respect of this, not quite my kind of, music. Not bad, not bad at all.

I already ahd this on my 'see live' list, and I was not disappointed. Way to go.
