Gavin DeGraw is a pop music and rock music artist who broke out in popularity in 2003 and 2004. He was born in February 1977 and grew up in South Fallsburg, NY. His father was a prison guard, as referenced in the song "I Don't Want to Be". DeGraw is a singer, songwriter, pianist, and guitarist. He tours to small venues throughout the United States. His J Records debut album, ''Chariot'', includes eleven songs.
DeGraw's profile erupted after his song "I Don't Want to Be" was featured as theme song for the teen soap opera ''One Tree Hill'', which airs on The WB Television Network|The WB. Another of DeGraw's songs, "Follow Through," has also achieved popularity and radio play. DeGraw recently released an acoustic version of ''Chariot'' called ''Chariot Stripped''. DeGraw and his band recorded the album live, in the studio, in only one take on the vocals, seeking an intimate effect.
Originally, DeGraw started in Manhattan clubs drawing his hometown fans to small clubs. Over 2004, his profile has grown bringing him to other states as he tours the country. He has appeared on television shows such as ''The Ellen DeGeneres Show'' and ''Live with Regis and Kelly''. Recently, he has been seen in cameos on ''Dead Like Me'' on Showtime, ''What I Like About You'' on the WB, and ''American Dreams''.
DeGraw has recently toured with such acts as ''The Barenaked Ladies'' and ''Butterfly Boucher''.
