 | This week's artist: Michael Jackson
Michael Jackson was born on August 29, 1958 and died on June 25, 2009
For many Michael Jackson is considered to be the 'King of Pop'. Though the last years of his life has been overshadowed by controversy, his influence on the pop music scene is incredible, selling hundreds of millions of albums worldwide.
He was born as the son of Joseph Jackson and Katherine Esther Scruse. As a young child he was already interested in dancing and singing and only a few years later, the group 'The Jackson Five' had emerged. The Five became popular in an instant, storming the charts with songs as "I Want You Back", "ABC", "The Love You Save" en "I'll Be There". The group ceased to exist in 1984.
With the rise of the Jackson Five, Michael Jackson particularly gained attention of the public eye. Motown Records saw his potential to become a huge star and thus Michael Jackson recorded and released his first solo single, 'Ben'. This was followed by four solo albums, of which 'Off The Wall' proved to be the start of a carreer of lifelong fame.
After his childhood success and the best-ever selling second album Thriller, which sold over 100 million copies, Michael Jackson began to change his appearance. His first autobiography, in which he describes his till then two plastic surgeries, sells over 200.000 copies. He is diagnosed with a skin-disease, which makes him whiter and whiter, and the rumours about his addiction to painkillers begin to start.
With all the money made he bought his own themepark, which included 40 people personell. In this time many children and families went to visit him. Michael Jackson was then first accused from child-abuse. This was never proven, so he was not found guilty, but his reputation was all-time low. Still living like a kind, his financial situation was even worse, and some said he had to sell Neverland.
While planning his return, Michael Jackson would have performed a stunning 50 times in Londen in 2009/2010 but...
Michael Jackson died tragically at the age of 50 on June 25, 2009.
At the memorial on the 7th of July, 2009, his daughter Paris, who appeared without a mask in public for the first time, said it was the best father any child could ever wish.
Records and album sales
The American artist sold over 750.000 albums, and the album Thriller is one of
the best selling albums ever. Seven of the singles from this album were hits.
