 | This week's artist: Eminem
Eminem (Marshall Bruce Mathers III) is by one of the most controversial and popular rappers. His carreer knows many ups and downs, including the fastest selling hiphop release ever with 'The Marshall Mathers LP' and the death of band member Proof of D12. Moron.nl has decided to put Eminem in this weeks spotlight.
One of the most influential factors of Eminem's lyrics is his early life. Shortly after his birth, is father abandoned him. His relationship with his mother was poor to say the best and Eminem dropped out of school at the age of seventeen.
Until the age of twelve, Marshall Mathers and his mother moved to various cities, when they finally moved to Detroit. This is the place where his interest in Hip Hop began to grow and started to actively participate in rap battles. In the course of time, his talent was recognized and his first album 'The Slim Shady EP' was released in 1998.
The Slim Shady EP was produced by friend, producer and rapper Dr. Dre. This album was the start of Eminem's mainstream success, selling triple platinum and applauded by both fans and critics. The records popularity also came with controversy. A great part of the lyrics deal with topics such as encouraging murder of a man's wife and lover (Guilty Conscience), disposing the body of his dead wife ('97 Bonnie and Clyde) and soforth.
Fuck that shit, you just caught this bitch cheatin
While you at work she's with some dude tryin to get off?!
FUCK slittin her throat, CUT THIS BITCH'S HEAD OFF!!!
The Marshall Mathers EP was released in 2001 and sold over 1.76 million copies in its first week, by which it became the fastest selling hip hop album ever. This album too was overshadowed by controversy. The first single ´The Real Slim Shady´ claims that Christina Aguilera has performed oral sex on Carson Daily and Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit).
So you can, sit me here next to Britney Spears?
Shit, Christina Aguilera better switch me chairs
so I can sit next to Carson Daly and Fred Durst
and hear 'em argue over who she gave head to first
Eminem has released a great deal of hit singles worldwide: The Way I Am, Stan, Rock City, Sing For The Moment, Mocking Bird, When I'm Gone, Like Toy Soldiers - just to name a few.
D12
D12 was founded in 1990 by rapper Proof, but became internationally successful when Eminem recorded his first album. This rap collective had a changing group of members. The original concept of D12 was to have 12 of Detroit's most talented rappers. However, they were never able to find 12 capable rappers. In order to come to twelve, they all created an alter-ego.
The group has released 3 albums; The Underground EP (1997), Devil's Night (2001) and D12 World (2004).
In 2006 founding member Proof died after suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. Fellow rappers and friends were shocked by the tragic event. Eminem read the eulogy at his memorial.
Comeback
In 2009 Eminem released his latest album 'Relapse', after sobering up from his addiction to sleep medicine.
