Biography:
Our choice for this week's artist: "Bubblegum" Britney. This teenage role model girl has in the past proved to be one of the most successful artists in pop history, among the pop-icons Madonna and Michael Jackson.
Britney Spears, born in Kentwood, Louisiana, U.S.A. on December 2nd 1981, got her big breakthrough in November 1998 with her debut single ‘Baby One More Time’, which smashed into the American Billboard charts at #1. Her debut album was released only a few weeks later and also hit the #1 position, making her the first ever female artist to have a simultaneous Billboard #1 single and album with a debut release in America. A lot of countries followed and the phenomenon "Britney Spears" was a fact.
For Britney, singing was always obvious at a young age. She auditioned for The Disney Channel’s ‘Mickey Mouse Club’ at the age of eight. But since she was too young to join, they couldn't let her in. However, from that point she got an agent in New York where she spent the next three summers studying performing arts. She began to act in TV commercials and off-Broadway shows.
Britney joined the Mickey Mouse Club and went back to New York to start a music career hoping to follow in the footsteps of her idols Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston.
Then the hit mania started. The first single was ‘Baby One More Time’. Other songs like "Oops! I did it again", "Sometimes", "(You Drive Me) Crazy", "Lucky", "Stronger, "I'm A Slave 4U" also got big or massive hits all over the world.
Britney performed at the MTV Europe Music Awards in Dublin, singing a hit Medley. She won all four awards for which she was nominated. The categories were Best Female Artist, Best Breakthrough Act, Best Pop Act and Best Song for ‘Baby One More Time’.
Her last big hit was 'Me Against The Music', featuring Madonna. She has just released her new single "Toxic", so we will probably see a lot of Britney this year as well!
