 | This week's artist: Red Hot Chilli Peppers
The Red Hot Chili Peppers (RHCP) was formed in 1979 at Fairfax High School, California by:
Anthony Kiedis (Vocals),
Michael Balzary (Bass) and
Hillel Slovak (Guitar).
Later on Jack Irons joined them playing the drums. 1979 was a revolution in the music
industry. Punk became very popular with Blondie and Talking Heads. At the start of the
80's, New Wave suddenly became very popular as well while disco was fading away. RHCP
was formed looking at the near future using Punk and Funk accolades. Little did they
know about the impact they would make many years later. RHCP was originally known as
"Tony Flow and the Miraculously Majestic Masters of Mayhem" throughout the early 80's
playing in small clubs to develop experience for their big breakthrough in 1983.At this
time Balzary changed his name to "Flea" and the band was renamed "Red Hot Chili Peppers".
Through hard work and gigs RHCP acquired a contract with EMI Records America and their
first big release in 1984. By then Irons and Slovak leave to make place for Jack Sherman
on guitar, and Cliff Martinez on bass. However this was not to last and Irons and Slovak
made their comeback for the follow-up "Freaky Styling". RHCP failed to capture live expe-
rience and set up a promising concept in 1987, making their next album, "The Uplift Mofo
Party Plan", sell more then it's predecessors.
The rising fame of RHCP was struck down by the drug overdose of Slovak in June '88.
Replacing him would be very hard as Irons would leave permanently and Kiedas was fighting
his own drug addiction. Flea came with the solution by adding John Frusciante and Chad
Smith to the formation. This line-up proved to be most succesfull with the Stevie Wonder
cover "Higher Ground" single release from the 1989 EMI album "Mother's Milk". From there
on the band would continue its way to the top.
In 1991 RHCP released "Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magik" with their newly signed label with Warner
Brothers. This pushed the band forever in the rock books. On this album were two top hits,
"Give It Away" and "Under The Bridge". After that RHCP got in rough waters but made it known
that they will be a popular favourite forever.
