 | This week's artist: The Darkness
"...so fucking rock it's positively painful."
Once upon a time, a boy called Justin Hawkins grew up in the Suffolk town of Lowestoft. He locked himself away and learnt guitar when he was young. He was pretty good, but his kid brother Dan was better. "I'm white hot," says Justin, "but he's shit hot." They started a cover band with Dan on lead vocals.
In 1997, Justin went to the University of Huddersfield. Dan moved to London in search of a band to join. There he met Frankie Poullain, a Scot who came from a family of adventurers (he claims his dad was a pirate in the West Indies, his brother a soldier of fortune, etc.)
The two brothers and Frankie formed an the prog rock band "Empire". Under Justin's guidance, they increased the heaviness of the sound, and threw out the lead singer. The brothers Hawkins had a talk. Was it worth carrying on?
The answer to that came on Millennium Eve, when the pair went back to Norfolk to their Aunty's pub.
Justin entered a karaoke competition and performed "Bohemian Rhapsody", performing as a real star. Dan was enthusiastic: "I know, YOU be the front man!.." The Darkness was born.
The Darkness scored in the UK with their first single "I Believe In A Thing Called Love", as well as in many other countries and they reached the Top 10 and even #1 positions. Their second single and in some countries B-side "Christmas Time (Don't Let The Bells End)" was a big hit, but not as massive as expected. Everyone in the UK thought it'd be the Christmas #1, but unfortunately they only reached the top 5. They also had a smashing performance at the EMA's in Scotland, presented by no other than Christina Aguilera.
The Darkness are very popular as you can see in our Top 10. They have conquered the #1 position a lot of times and are still in the struggle. We expect to hear more of them!
