 | This week's artist: Dido
Biography:
The Early Years
When Dido was five years old she stole a recorder (a flute-like instrument) from school. Dido didn't end up behind bars, but a year later her recorder practice helped land her a spot at the Guildhall School of Music in London, England. Dido was quite a musician - she played the piano, violin, and of course the recorder, by the time she was 10. During her teenage years Dido was known to sneak some of her brothers' records, like ones by punk-rock band The Clash or pop group Duran Duran. When Dido wasn't rootin' through her bros' stuff she was touring the UK with her classical music group. When Dido was 16 she fell in love with the music of jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald. Dido's deep passion for music led her to start singing with different bands around London.
Faithless
Dido's first vocal gig came on an album for Faithless, a band her brother Rollo had formed. Interested in recording an album, but afraid to ask her brother for a break with his band, Dido spent much of her time loitering around the studio in hopes that she would be asked to contribute her vocals. Her persistance paid off. The release came out in 1995, and it received favorable reviews. Faithless toured the world for the next two years, selling an excellent five million copies of their album. Dido was loving the lifestyle - meeting all kinds of new people, and gaining excellent exposure.
Eminem
Dido continued to promote her work- performing in clubs, as well as contributing her song "Thank You" to the soundtrack of the film, "Sliding Doors." The song gathered the attention of one rather influential individual - rap star Eminem. Interested in sampling a portion of the song for one of his recordings, Eminem approached Dido about a collaboration, and she quickly agreed. The song - titled "Stan," was a runaway success, and it opened the door for Dido, providing her with instant exposure to a large audience.
No Angel
From her album No Angel the singles 'Thank You', 'Here With Me', 'Hunter' and 'All You Want' were released. She performed at various award shows and won tons of awards.

Life For Rent
In September 2003, Dido released her second album Life For Rent. The video for the first single, White Flag, features David Boreanaz from the hit show, Angel. White Flag reached the top 10 in many countries. Dido's second single taken from her stunning new album is out now. The album title track, Life For Rent, is released on two CD formats. CD 1 is a limited edition release that features Life For Rent plus an exclusive remix of White Flag by the Idjut Boys. CD 2 features the radio edit of Life For Rent plus a remix of the track by Skinny. CD 2 also includes the Spiritchaser remix of Stoned and the Life For Rent video.
